Master the Art of Blow-Drying for Volume: Blow Dry Tips

As a stylist, I know firsthand how empowering a good blowout can feel. Achieving that professional, voluminous finish at home might seem tricky—but with the right techniques, tools, and a little patience, it’s totally within reach. Follow these expert blow dry tips to elevate your routine and enjoy salon-quality results from the comfort of your own home.

Step 1: Preparation

Begin with freshly washed, damp hair. To protect your strands from heat damage while enhancing shine, apply a high-quality heat protectant, such as J Beverly Hills 5 in 1 or Everyday Spray. For added lift and body, consider using a volumizing mousse or spray, such as Lift Up, Mousse Up, or Bodifer.

Step 2: Essential Tools

Investing in a top-tier blow dryer is key to achieving the best results. The J Beverly Hills Pro Dryer or the Dyson Supersonic both offer multiple heat and speed settings, along with nozzle attachments designed to enhance precision and control.

A round brush is essential for boosting volume and achieving a smooth finish. The J Beverly Hills Ceramic Wire Hot Curling Brush is an excellent choice. If you have curly or textured hair, opt for a flat brush with a mix of natural and nylon bristles, such as those from Mason Pearson or Kent, to help control frizz and shape your style.

Keep sectioning clips handy to streamline the blow-drying process. Alligator clips with teeth, shaped like a bent finger, are particularly effective for securing large sections of hair, keeping your styling process organized and efficient.

Step 3: Rough Drying for Volume

Direct the nozzle at the roots, aiming the airflow upwards to lift the hair and create volume. Focus on the crown and sides, where volume matters most, but be careful not to overheat your scalp. Once the roots are dry, rough dry the rest of your hair until it is about 85% dry. At this stage, you should already notice added body and smoothness, even before incorporating a brush.

Step 4: Blow-Dry Techniques for Maximum Lift

Divide your hair into four sections or work on one area at a time for better control. When blow-drying, always aim the nozzle downward along the hair shaft to smooth the cuticle and minimize frizz. Keep the brush parallel to both the dryer and the hair to maintain alignment and achieve a sleek finish.

Since the roots already have volume, focus on styling the mid-lengths and ends. Use the brush on half-inch sections, lifting as you dry to preserve volume. One of my go-to tips? Tilt your round brush slightly at the roots while lifting for maximum volume without needing to tease! If your roots have sufficient height, blow-dry the lengths straight down for a more polished look. Those with fine hair should work with larger sections to combine the strength of multiple strands, ensuring a smooth texture without sacrificing body. Avoid working with overly small sections, as this can slow down the process and prevent the desired smoothness.

Step 5: Finishing Touches for a Lasting Blowout

Once your hair is completely dry, switch to the cool setting on your blow dryer to help seal the hair cuticle, reduce frizz, and lock in your style for lasting hold and shine. To lock in your look, apply a lightweight hairspray like Hold Me Lite or a nourishing serum such as Revive Oil by J Beverly Hills. These finishing products add hold, brilliance, and longevity to your blowout.

By consistently practicing these techniques, you’ll master the art of blow-drying and achieve salon-quality results from the comfort of your home. Confidence starts with how you feel, and great hair can make all the difference. Your hair is your crown—so wear it with pride, volume, and a smile!

Where to Find These Products and Tools

All the products and tools mentioned are ones I personally use in my salon. I’ve included options at various price points to ensure accessibility while emphasizing quality for durability and longevity. While I use my tools daily for extended periods, your at-home use will be far less frequent, allowing you to enjoy them for years with proper care.

J Beverly Hills products and tools are available in-salon or through The Hair Mansion Online Store. The Kent multi-natural and nylon bristle flat brush can be purchased exclusively in the salon. While I use and recommend the Dyson Supersonic and Mason Pearson brushes, these are not available for sale in my salon, and I have no affiliation with them.

We occasionally stock clips for sale in the salon, but they can also be conveniently purchased online. Look for high-quality alligator clips to aid in your styling routine.

During the pandemic, I created a fun video in my bathroom to help my guests achieve volume with a smooth, shiny finish at home. Since many were coloring their hair themselves, I wanted to provide extra knowledge and inspiration to keep their hair looking its best. Using a blow dryer with a nozzle, I demonstrated easy-to-follow techniques, incorporating J Beverly Hills 5 in 1 and Revive Oil—both essential for that salon-quality voluminous shine. It was my way of staying connected and ensuring my guests still felt confident and cared for.
